Replacing RSV Spark Plugs

To replace the RSV spark plugs, follow these steps:

1. Remove the drivers seat as shown in this article: http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002004&id=236

2. Remove the gas tank as shown here: http://www.venturers.org/Tech_Library/index.php?action=article&cat_id=002010&id=235

3. Remove the upper engine supports from both sides. See photo below:

4. Remove the spark plug wires. At this point it is a good idea to blow away any loose debri from around the plugs before removing them to avoid loose debri from falling into the engine. An air compressor works well for this. Using a 18mm deep well spark plug socket and extension, remove the old plugs.

5. Inspect the old plugs for any signs of improper wear. See photo below:

6. Coat the threads of the new plugs with some anti-seize compound and install them. Tighten plugs to 13 ft-lb. Push plug wires on firmly. You should feel a snap when they are on all the way. Recommended plugs are either NGK DPR8EA-9 * or  Denso X22EPR-U9.

Manufacture recommended GAP: 0.8-0.9 mm (0.031-0.035 in)

7. Now re-install the upper engine supports (46.1 ft-lb), gas tank (11.5 ft-lb rear bolt, 62 in.-lb front bolts) and drivers seat (62 in.-lb).

* Note about finding the NGK plugs at your local parts store. I recently went to my local AutoZone looking for plugs. They could not find the NGK DPR8EA-9 plugs in their computer. The women working the counter went in back and found them anyway. On the box is another number, 4929. She checked that number in the computer and sure enough they were listed. Anyway, if your local parts store doesn't seem to carry the correct NGK plugs, have them check for number 4929. Might save you a trip to the Yamaha dealer.
