A while ago, the topic of resistor plugs was brought up and questions arose to their purpose and why you would or would not use them in our machines. Anyways, I can't seem to keep myself out of trouble. In the last couple of weeks I have gotten heavily involved with COP [coil on plug] ignition systems used on the newer cars and trucks. More specifically, Ford.

In my research, I came across the terms EMI [electro magnetic interference] and RFI [radio frequency interference]. Without going crazy here, EMI and RFI both affect frequency.

EMI is caused by the rapid switching action of semi conductors, relays,etc., which results in undesirable currents and voltages or electrical noise spread over the whole electro magnetic spectrum, or in our case, the bike's electrical system. It can affect broadcast reception and can lead to malfunctions of sensitive electrical and electronic equipment. The latter is NOT yet used on our scooters. So we're pretty safe there. LOL!!!

RFI, refers to electrical noise spread over part of the system specifically used for broadcasting.[the AM,FM radio or CB] Both EMI and RFI are also known as ELECTRONIC POLLUTION.

Hence the RESISTOR plug. It is used to surpress EMI and RFI. Because the ignition coils push out any wheres from 5 - 40,000 volts to fire the plugs and because the wires carry this high voltage to the plugs, EMI and RFI are created. The resistor plug minimizes this.

In addition to resistor plugs, noise surpression filters are also used in most systems to further control RFI.

Now this applies more to the automobile than our scooters because the scooters don't have all the electronic gadgets like the automobiles do. Plus,the motorcycle industry hasn't gotten into frequency yet for the electronics used to run the bikes ignition system.

So again, my point is that it is safe to use a non resistor plug in the scooters, not to mention the fact that they will run better with that non resistor plug. The only thing that might be affected would be ignition frequency which the scooters do not have as of right now. As far as the RFI, my radio and CB works just fine and I am currently and have used non resistor plugs on ALL my ventures from my 1983 thru my present 99.

Now that everyone is thoroughly confused, I can go back to sleep. LOL!!LOL!! Dave!!!

Gonna bring this one back.

Yamaha has a tech bulletin (#M2002-018) from a few years ago dealing with this issue. They recommend using whatever is specified for the bike to reduce any "EMI" interference. They say excess "EMI" can damage sensitive electronic equipment such as CDI or TCI units. They also say it can lead to a misfire condition.

Just thought some of you may be interested.
