Changing Fork Seals

Changing the seals is not a hard job. Biggest thing is to get the proper allen wrench (17mm I think) or have some one make a wrench for you out of a bolt and couple of nuts. They need to be welded together to work. NAPA has the proper wrench about $7 I think.
The other thing you will need is a way to put the seals in (if on bike). What I did was fabricate a tool out of about 1.25 inch pipe to fit aound fork legs, cut portion (about 30%) away to fit around leg yet be able to get on/off. Have it welded with a place to hit it to drive seal on.
Last item you may need will be broom stick and strap assembly to tighten the lower bolts to the internal rods. I used the ratchet tied down worked well. Once all this is in place everything else is easy. .........Hank

I do all my own maintenance. I do not change my fork seals though. If you wish a quick and efficient change of fork seals, I would suggest that YOU do the removal of the forks from the bike, and bring them both to the dealer. Removing the forks from the bike is a significant effort, (but not very difficult) and the bike shop would be happy I am sure to charge you heartily for this effort if given the chance. The dealer has the tools to disassemble the forks, replace the seals, and refill with the fluid of your choice. I found that the bolt at the bottom of the forks needed an air impact to remove - my tools would simply turn it in circles. Also, the dealer can check for and repair those almost invisible nicks and marks that would make the new seals fail. I have found that they can usually do this service "next day at 5pm", and the charge is about an hour's labour. ...........Scott MacMartin
