Radiator Cap Substitute

Bob, Scott: was out riding today and the bike was running hot but not boiling over, started thinking about what it could be, not enough water, (full), wrong mix (set at 50-50), Bad t-stat ( not boiling over). Anyhow, still thought and then tried to check the radiator cap, but I do not have the right adapter for the small neck. Went to auto zone and Pep boys tried to match and looked at stant 1127 (I think it was), but they did not have way to measure either the pressure or the dimensions of the seal. Went to autozone looked at their stuff, found a cap tester, and micrometer found their CST 7513 to be very close dimension wise, bought it ($5) and will try it out tomorrow. The original cap would not hold any pressure require I think 13 lbs.

Bob: got it out, high 80's, normal stp/go, some highway, ran up to the high green, never boiled, still better than yesterday. Sent an email to stant to ask about the benefit of the 16 lb cap, and to preston to see what they say about ensuring proper antifreeze mix. Will send you the replies.

Sorry to take so long but as promised I went and changed the 4 little plugs that go in each water jacket, they run about $5 each but are a snap to change. You thread an old sparkplug in and pull it out and push the new one in. The chrome cover is what keeps them in and from leaking, I had 2 seeping. I also pulled the T stat it is a 180 degree tstat and I went and checked it out with hot water it only opened a little bit then closed again, so I went and bought a caliper went to autozone and checked out all their tstats. Found one just a little different dimensionally 471-180 ($5) brought it home it fit the housing just right. I put everything back together (no ride yet) let it run checked the temp at which it opened (180) and it seems it is going to work. They also have a 160 degree but it is one that has to be ordered. They also have some lifetime guaranteed ones that are new but they are also about $9. One thing is that it never boiled but the fan didn't come on till full in the red zone (david how did the hard wire come out?). Also the tstat can be changed without pulling the radiator.

Hey all just a quick update: I placed the 180 degree Tstat in this weekend, got to try it tonight. Temp about 99 dropping to about 96, 10% humidity (dry out), 2 up. Anyhow bike ran fairly cool (mid green) until got to some stop lights went to high green, dropped as I got some movement. Stayed in hi green, no boiling out or boiling that I could tell. After it cooled to about 96 went solo to interstate, temp ran about 3/4 of green at 55-85 mph. I am not liking the hi green temp, got back while putting back into the shed checked for fan operation, came on at low red stayed steady. I have the autozone cap (13 lb) and the autozone 471-180 tstat. I plan to change to the 471-160 tstat this weekend time permitting. If all else fails may hard wire fan to switch.

Ok heres what I have. The tstat is simular for one found in the small imports 85-88 1.6 chevy, 89-96 geo 1.6, 83-84 2.0 toyota truck, 86-89 2.2 toy truck, all toy cars with 1.5,1.6, 1.8 engines. Includesd camry's/ Found a Beck Arnly for a camry I think 143-0728 ys-4 (170 degree) wouldnt open on stove test, took it back. very close to the Yamaha size wise. The stant 160 I used had to be modified by grinding down about 1/8 inch all around 35366, totally different from the original or any of the others, seems to work ok though. Suppossedly napa 156 will work, never could locate one however. Hoses I went to a parts house found one that had almost the right size for the big end at tstat housing cut to fit, found an "S" hose for the drain line lost the numbers off them however, but just go look and you can find some. Bike still runs in high green but we have had hot weather, never really a factor till had to wait at lights or stop signs. If I ran the 16 lb cap it might make a little difference, but the system is not designed for the pressure. Anyhow, thats where I am at, give it a try and let me know what you come up with.
